24 Rules Change How Pools Are Heated
Beginning January 1, 2026, California energy code no longer allows gas-only heaters for new or newly heated pools.
Under updated 24 requirements, homeowners must use renewable heating solutions such as:
- Solar thermal pool systems, typically sized to at least 65 percent of the pool’s surface area
- Code-compliant electric heat pumps
These rules apply not only to new pool construction. Adding heat to a previously unheated pool now triggers the same renewable energy requirements, even for existing homes.
Important note on Solar Electricity Incentives
For solar electricity systems installed in 2026 and beyond, federal tax credits apply primarily to leased systems, not owned systems.
